Just getting started, need some help

Postby sayeda » Sat Jul 25, 2009 5:23 am

Hello,
I just received my dermaray and I am very excited to use it, however, I need a little bit of help.

i am using the product for hair loss and I wondered if i have put the best skin type in. I am Asian Pakistani and so I have brownish skin, although I tan quite easily and go dark. I am also somewhat sensitive to the sun. I put the olive skin type in, but just wanted to be sure.

Also I am not sure if ive missed something out, but i read the instructions and I am a little bit confused about a couple of things: I inputed the scalp area, and my name etc...but what do i need to do when I come back to the product to start treatment. It talks about right/ left buttons, but I thought those are for manual functions, so please advise. I am hoping to just start it, and have it stop at a certain time once the treatment time is complete. I did give it a go, but no treatment times showed up, and in the summary it showed 0 as treatment time and exposure (though my scalp feels warm so I know the lamp was on)

Also, I am wondering if the larger goggles are ok to use whilst having the treatment on my scalp? The small ones are darker, but are slightly difficult to have on and move the comb around the scalp.

Really looking forward to some advice and guidance here. I want to use the product correctly, and I am a bit nervous about over exposure etc.

Many thanks,
Sayeda

Hello Sayeda,

I would say your skin type is correct from your description. The inbuilt Dermaray exposure templates are very conservative so there should be no problem.

Once you have Dermaray programmed (which is sounds like you have achieved) you can started YOUR next treatment by pressing and holding the RIGHT button for 3 seconds at the Welcome screen. You are also correct at the Welcome screen the UP and DOWN buttons can be used to manually start your Dermaray. At the welcome screen Dermaray behaves similarly to a normal "unintelligent" system. Pressing ENTER again will give access to the many advanced and unique features. But the RIGHT button is a short cut to simply bypass everything and start YOUR next programmed session.

The small goggles offer the best protection. The larger ones are more convenient and also useful when treating other areas of the body, or possibly if you have a helper assisting with your treatment.

Providing Dermaray has been programmed, it is nearly impossible to over expose. This is the primary safety feature found in all Dermaray phototherapy units.

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your advice earlier, I started the treatment however something is still confusing me. How long are treatments supposed to be? I have it set for olive skin and scalp for hair loss. The treatment went on for over half an hour and so I shut it off. There are no guidance times in the manual so I wondered what I should be expecting in terms of treatment length. Also, will treatments tend to be longer with time? please advise (the manual had said something like 10-17 minutes on average so when the machine didn't shut off in that time, I was quite alarmed.)

Another question: I have hair loss at the hair line which of course is right near the face. Should I be setting this as a separate area or just move it around at the same time as I work on the scalp?

Really appreciate your guidance.

Hello Sayeda,

There are no specific references in the user guide, as the duration of treatment depends on the patient's skin type and also condition being treated. Dermaray calculates this all for you. Your skin type should be 15 or 16 minutes. Did you start "your next programmed treatment" by holding the RIGHT key at the Welcome screen? If you start Dermaray Manually, then it would not shut off until you cancel the treatment. You need to load YOUR next treatment, and it should turn off automatically after your treatment time. Longer treatment should not cause any problem, there are no known side effects of occasional over exposure with LLLT.

Your entire scalp is one treatment area. You can concentrate on problem areas, but it is best to treat your entire scalp.

Hi again Nick,

I may be doing something wrong, I am not sure. I loaded my name and skin type etc, and then I did exactly what you said pressed the right button down for 3 seconds, and the machine just kept going!

What do I do from here? I am confused as to what may have happened with the programming. Also, just to mention, the set up did not show up when i charged and started it for the first time, I had to go into the main menu and do it that way. do you think something may have gone wrong?

please help!

Hi,

We have found that one or two units may have been activated while in transport due to pressure on the packaging, if this is the case, the setup Wizard may not have started after the first actiation. I would suggest following the user guide to perform a SOFTWARE RESET, found in the System Tools menu. This will reset the Dermaray to default, and allow you to setup the Date / Time / Patient Information over again, and start from fresh settings. I am sure this will get you up and running straight away.
