What's the difference between the FDA and the AMA

Postby rukasom » Sat May 01, 2010 2:12 pm

What's the difference between the FDA and the AMA when it comes to approving diet pills? Heard a recent news report that there's a diet pill that has been approved by the FDA for the first time. How have previous diet pills made it to store shelves w/o FDA approval??

Hi rukasom,

The Food and Drug Administration or FDA, is a Government agency. regarding their role in dietary suppliments "manufacturers do not need to register their products with FDA nor get FDA approval before producing or selling dietary supplements", http://www.fda.gov/Food/DietarySupplements/default.htm. So I am not too sure why someone would need the FDA to approve their suppliment unless they are making medical/clinical claims about its effects.

The FDA is empowered to test claims by the manufacturer for truthfulness for dietary suppliments, along with making sure that the food supply is safe witin the USA. It is the FDA how certifies drugs are safe to be used, it is the FDA who issues recalls and bans drugs when they are shown to have negative health impacts.

American Medical Association (AMA) on the other hand is effectively the union for doctors. as a not for profit organisation they seek to improve health training and funding.

I hope this helps.

Otherwise do you recall which product you had seen recevie the FDA approval?
