Activities that Aggravate Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a recurring (chronic) condition that can flare up without any apparent cause. However, some activities, such as staying in the sun too long or wearing clothes that chafe, are known to aggravate the condition. Episodes also can be triggered by stress, dry skin, infections (such as strep throat), reactions to medication, or seasonal changes in environment.
Injury to the skin caused by scratching or rubbing should be avoided as much as possible. If you are treating psoriasis with light therapy, be sure to prevent sunburn, which can make lesions worse.
Medications used to treat high blood pressure, depression, and other conditions also can irritate psoriasis. These medications include beta-blockers (such as Inderal), lithium, and gold.
