Emotional Health

One of the most important elements of self care for psoriasis is taking care of your emotional health. Living with psoriasis can be stressful, and stress can exacerbate physical discomfort. With effective self care, it is often possible to ease both emotional and physical symptoms.

For people with visible psoriasis lesions, it can be a struggle to maintain a positive self-image and handle negative interactions with strangers. Additional stress can occur if family members, friends, or co-workers do not understand the condition. Your dermatologist or other healthcare professional may be able to conduct a family counseling session about psoriasis, as well as offer stress reduction strategies. You also might consider inviting your friends and family to take this assessment to learn more about the condition.

It is not unusual for people to feel a range of emotions about their disease. Some people find it helpful to confide in a close friend or healthcare professional. Over time, the sympathetic support of informed friends and family can make a big difference in improving your health.
