Between one tenth and one third of people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis because of their condition. One recent study suggests that in people who have psoriasis, corticosteroid use may increase the risk of developing psoriatic arthritis; pregnancy may decrease this risk.

Psoriatic arthritis should be treated early to prevent joint damage. Joints may be painful, swollen, and hard to move. Small joints of the hands and feet are frequently affected, but larger joints also are at risk. However, most of these symptoms, as well as morning stiffness, also can be caused by many other forms of arthritis.
